Considering locs? Uncle Funky's Daughter specializes in cultivating long, lush, healthy locs. Hairlocking is a process that occurs when tightly coiled or spiraled hair develops in its natural state, without combing or the use of chemicals. We offer several options for starting locs including Comb Twists, Two Strand Twists, Interlocking, SisterlocksTM and BrotherlocksTM. A consultation with a stylist will help you to identify which method is right for you.
For shorter lengths (4" or less), we recommend the Comb Twist method. Comb Twists are small cylindrical shaped curls formed using a barber comb in a diagonal or bricklayer pattern. The initial installation takes approximately 2 hours. For maintenance, we suggest clients schedule appointments every 3-4 weeks. We use the Palm Roll Method, a technique of rolling each individual section to encourage uniform growth.
For longer lengths (5" or more) and Loc Resistant Hair (straighter textures) we recommend the Two Strand Twist and Interlocking Methods. Two Strand Twists are two sections of hair double twisted to form a consistent rope like pattern. Interlocking is a process using a crochet hook where the lock is woven into itself. The initial installation of these styles can last up to 8 weeks before a maintenance appointment is required. Thereafter, clients are urged to schedule regular maintenance appointments every 4-6 weeks. Many clients opt for these two methods over the Comb Twist Method because the required maintenance is less and with the Interlocking Method, hair can be shampooed without disturbing the maintenance.
We also offer loc extensions. Loc extensions are ideal for individuals who desire to have instant locs. Loc Extensions are a braided or twisted base that is attached to hair and cylindrically wrapped using yarn fiber or human hair. This process takes several hours to complete and is recommended for clients who wish to grow out their natural locs using this method. In other words, we do not recommend loc extensions for individuals who desire to wear them for a short while. Loc Extensions are also great for clients with mature locs that need repair and/or lengthening.
