Natural Choice. Tired of spending hours and money every week in salons, more black women are giving up chemically treated hair. Sometimes freedom comes in simple things. On November 12, 2006, the Houston Chronicle ran a full page 3 section feature on natural hair. Uncle Funky's Daughter salon was featured along with TV anchor Debra Duncan and several natural Houstonians.

What to expect. Transitioning from permed hair to natural hair requires patience. According to stylist Tonya Reed of Uncle Funky's Daughter, the process can take up to a year or more for the hair to reach a length that's versatile for many hairstyles. She gives the following advice:

  • If you're not ready to cut off the permed hair, wear an extension style to transition.
  • When your hair is between hair textures, you will experience shedding and breakage from daily grooming. Keep your hair moisturized.
  • Have patience and a commitment.
